Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a central pump; it relies on muscle contraction, breathing and gentle movement to help transport excess fluid, waste products and immune cells through the body. When we’re stressed, sedentary or recovering from illness, this flow can become sluggish, contributing to fluid retention and that “inflamed” feeling. Basically it needs a little bit of encouragement to get it to where it needs to be!
